IKEA Step Stool Hack

If you’re like me with independent kiddos, you probably have way too many step stools around your house.  My favorite are the Bekvam stools from IKEA because I like how tall they are.  I decided it was  time to put one in Avé’s room, but wanted to add a bit of something to it, so with a few spare minutes this IKEA step stool hack was born!

white Ikea stool on pink rug

IKEA Step Stool Hack Supplies:

Wooden Stool

Sand paper or Sanding Block (the block makes it much easier)

Roll of Patterned Self-Adhesive Vinyl (I used this one)

white stool on pink rug

Steps:

For the top just slowly apply a sheet of Vinyl so that it is smooth and doesn’t have any bubbles.  Leave overhang over all sides, and cover the hole in the center if you’re doing the IKEA stool

Take your sanding block or paper around the edges.  The Vinyl will wear down and then sort of cut off in a straight line.

Cut a slit through the center, and use your sanding block to carefully sand down the edges of the cutout.  It will take a minute or two to get the corners but the block still makes it go smoothly.

For the bottom you will do the exact same thing, but before laying your piece down you will want to cut a notch out of the two back corners.  Leave the same overhang and sand down the edges.

This total took me about 10 minutes to complete, and the Vinyl that I purchased could do minimum 2 of these stools, so it was not an expensive project.  I would love to see your finished product if you give this a go!

Two.Five year old Avé

Like I said. Lots of “celebrations” happening around our house this month.  April and October are FULL of birthdays in our house….well all the birthdays actually.  I will spare you all the update on Sam’s life happenings this week as a 28.5 year old ha.

Avé is full of personality at 2 years old, and most people assume she is a year older than she is.  She is super tall, but continues to be a scrawny little one.  She speaks and understands language a little better than I was prepared for at this age…so be warned she can (and will) tell you off haha.

Things I always want to remember about 2.5 year old Avé:

  • She calls eyebrows eye bones.  And has appreciation for great ‘eye bones’ already (ha)
  • She is scared of big or noisy things, and its the ONLY time she wants me to hold her.
  • Back tickles and rubs are her favorite thing and will make her lay still for as long as you want.
  • Her love of the Trolls movie is going strong.
  • We often find her singing to the radio and she says that the Hilary Scott song “Thy Will” is her song, and she can sing the full thing.  It’s the sweetest thing!
  • Her favorite color is pink, and she requests ALL things in pink.
  • She loves school, and is very well behaved there.  She is a bit like the mother hen to other kiddos.
  • Her favorite animal seems to change all the time, but I can tell she leans towards pink animals (‘mangos’, pigs, etc)
  • She loves to wear jewelry and pretend makeup, and will drop anything she’s doing to get her hands on my makeup.
  • Footie PJs are her favorite thing ever – or being naked. She is nearly always naked at home.
  • She’s a picky eater, but loves fatty meats.  Pepperoni, Salami, Bacon for every meal?
  • She tries to fight bedtime much more than Jack ever did.

Overall she is such a joy.  Avé is wild, and sweet, and tests limits in ways I didn’t expect from my sweet, quiet, little baby girl.  Her sassy side seems more obvious to me most of the time, but she is so loving and gentle and makes us so proud.  She loves her daddy like no one else, and the feeling is pretty mutual.  She is a true beauty inside and out, and truly a dream come true for Sam and myself.  I’m so glad she was my first..or only (you guys will have to wait to see) baby girl!!

Love you sweet Avé.  Always continue to be your strong willed, sweet, loving, wild personality, and I have NO DOUBTS that life will never be able to hold you down.

Bar Renovation with Gold accents on a Budget

I’m working on a full before and after “one year update” post for you all to see how some simple updates have really changed our house in 1 year, however we are getting new floors next month (YAY)  so I think I’ll hold the big before and after post for that.  In the mean time I thought I would share our bar renovation.  Last summer we had the butlers pantry style ‘hallway bar’ torn out in our house and redone. To see the before check out this post. Picture brown cabinets, bright green paint, brown LEATHER counter tops, and 2 shelves with very VERY ornate etching in them hung above. Thats it.  It had a simple sink and was absolutely  the ugliest spot in the house.  I wanted a white bar with gold accents, so we needed to tear it out and start from scratch.

This was above my wheelhouse for fixing it on my own, and although the lower cabinets could have been painted, we decided to add a wine fridge while we were at it, so we brought in a professional.

The after has left it one of my favorite areas in my house…for so many reasons haha. It is bright, adds a ton of storage, and is perfect for entertaining.  We cut costs by doing a lesser expensive counter top to look like marble because heat resistance was not an issue in a bar area. I also got all our hardware at IKEA and got an affordable faucet off Amazon that Sam was easily able to install on his own.

white bar with mini fridge

There are definitely times and places to spend the money on renovation projects, but by all means look to cut costs in the small areas that contractors won’t lead you to!

white bar with gold accents

as a side note: the area this bar is in is really narrow front to back which made finding a wine fridge nearly impossible so we went with a small option that wouldn’t hang out too far.

What are your go to ways to save money on big renovation projects?

Avé’s Nursery

It has obviously been nearly 3 years since I completed Avés nursery, and it has since been left behind at our last house, however I thought it was time I document the space that I loved so much at the time. Her walls were a bit more pink than I was going for, and the room was simple and done on a budget, but a mamas dream none the less! I was lucky enough to have our amazing newborn photographer get some amazing pictures of her pink and gold nursery while she photographed our new little peanut, so we can forever remember her space.

To see her updated room now Check it out here!

All of her bedding was mama made, the gumball machine was a thrift store up-cycle, and her mobile was DIY.  I wanted a room as sweet as her..can’t you tell?

Let me know if you have any questions on where any details are from (if they can still be found ha) or how to DIY any of the little projects.  This was truly a simple room to complete – Just took a lot of gold spray paint and fabric 😉 There is something about a pink and gold nursery that can be so timeless and adorable and I love remembering this room.

Do you love more gender neutral nurseries, or are you like me – dive all in on the blue or pink?

Master Bathroom Update

I have been on a mission to have the upstairs of our house “done” before baby #3 arrives in June.  This has meant Nesting 2.0 and project after project. Last weeks project was our master bathroom.  The previous owners of our home updated the master bathroom fairly recently, so it didn’t require a ton of work, however the updates and color choices were definitely not to our taste.  I prefer my home to feel bright and airy and the bathroom did not have that feel.  So with that came an update including blue bathroom cabinets!

blue cabinets in bathroom

blue bathroom cabinets

Here is a before shot (with the previous owners decor)

While scrolling through Pinterest I saw a pin from Kate over at housemixblog and knew I had my inspiration.  She had created a plant wall that I knew would be perfect under the skylight in our bathroom and could be executed fairly easily!  The current tile in our bathroom is grey and the paint was a bit of a ‘griege’ tone so I knew with a few little tweaks and her amazing plant wall it would brighten the space on a budget.

painted bathroom blue cabinets

First off the whole space went from griege to white.  I went with Behr -Falling Snow.

Next we removed the current mirror that was WAY too big for the space and replaced it with two round mirrors. (there is a hallway from our master to master bath with 3 MASSIVE mirror doors…so less mirror in the bathroom was a must ha)

 blue cabinets

The vanity, although in great shape was also a dark brown and truly did nothing for the space in my opinion, so I gave the cabinets a breath of new life with a coat of paint.  I went with a medium blue to keep things light but somewhat timeless.  (paint color : BEHR layers of ocean in a satin finish)

plant wall bathroom

Next was hanging my IKEA Lack shelves and filling them with plants of various sizes and shapes.  Similar to Kate I did a mix of fake and real plants and kept them all in white pots for a somewhat uniform look.

plant wall on Ikea shelves

Last was just adding a few little accents.  I put a couple of planters in other spaces to tie things together and some blue candles by the tub. This piece of framed art was perfect for tying together the blue, green, and browns that were still in the space.

How do you brighten a space on a budget?  Let me know if I can answer any questions about this simple project!

4.5 Year old Jack

Sometimes I feel like time is slipping away from me with my sweet babies.  They are growing so fast, and constantly changing.  When I decided I wanted to blog again, I told myself that I would keep it mostly about my passions (DIY, Decor, etc), but I can’t forget to share my number one passion from time to time – my family!

This week both of my kids have half birthdays, but since Jack’s comes first – here are some things I never want to forget about my sweet, gentle 4.5 year old!

  • He is SO appreciative of all things big and small.  He got a new mattress and box spring last week and wrapped his arms around my neck, and thanked Sam and I a million times.
  • He LOVES the trolls movie, and dances to all the songs.  It’s amazingly cute and truly fills my heart.
  • He tells me all the time about how he had a “greaty day” and then follows up with one of his favorite moments from the day.
  • He LOVES to spell and is really REALLY good at it for a 4 year old.
  • Super why is his current favorite show.
  • His favorite color is blue, and he isn’t a huge fan of anyone else having it, other than his Uncle Ben – he’s accepted that!
  • His favorite food is Pizza.
  • He loves Carrots and oranges
  • He gets frustrated getting dressed and undressed himself, but is trying really hard.
  • He loves school, especially on wednesdays when he goes a full day.
  • He still LOVES animals and nature, and worms, and basically all things living.
  • He loves to ride his scooter, but is a bit unsure about his bike.
  • He recently has gotten really great at coloring in the lines, and he’s so proud when he does well at it- and so are we!

Overall Jack is truly the most amazing gift from God.  I don’t think I had too many preconceived notions about having a son, but the few that were there, he proved wrong.  He has taught me more in 4.5 years than I expected to learn in a lifetime.  We have had our fair share of challenges, and I would be lying if I said every moment of parenting him has been perfect and easy.  He struggles understanding language a bit, but has worked hard, and continues to work hard, and we have learned to see God’s blessings in that.  He is allergic to egg, and everything containing it, so we have learned to read labels, avoid activities and events, and teach him about it not always being fair.  He is gentle, sensitive, kind, wild, smart, loud, busy, and all around an amazing brother and son.  We can’t wait to see what God has in store for his amazing little life!

I love you my sweet Jack Joseph – to the moon and back 16 times 😉

Favorite Ikea Items

Ikea frame wall | Favorite Ikea Items

Okay – I know, I know, Ikea is a big “no no”after 30, but lets be clear.  Im not over 30 and when I am, Ikea isn’t going anywhere in my life!  You cant beat the affordability of some of Ikea’s products and they are truly made with the family friendly home in mind.  They carry so many great neutral items that I just can’t say no to.  So on your next trip to Ikea pick up a few of these to complete your home decor on a budget!!

Ikea must haves | Favorite Ikea Items

  1. Plants: Ikea has an amazing selection of super affordable plants for both indoor and outdoor.
  2. Baskets: I’m especially loving this new Jassa Basket
  3. Frames: I always hit Ikea for frames before searching elsewhere. They are super affordable, and I love that they stay pretty consistent to add to frame walls over time! My favorite that I used for the frame wall in this post are the Virserum frames.  I also used Ikea Frames in this post to create these large framed chalkboards!
  4. Pots: I LOVE their plain white pots, and have multiple sizes sprinkled around my house.
  5. Feather pillow inserts: Fjadrar come in multiple sizes
  6. White colander: seems random but these are both useful and great for displaying fruit on your counter or in your bar.
  7. Lighting: So many great options, however my current favorite is this natural looking beauty for only $75!
  8. Faux plants: Seriously the best selection! Go get some.
  9. This end table: I searched high and low for a family friendly yet attractive end table and the Sandhaug end table fit the bill.  It also has hidden storage which always wins in this mom’s book!
  10. Picture Ledge: I have used them in kids rooms and the playroom as book shelves and LOVE them, but they are also a beautiful way to display prints or decorative plates.
  11. Kids chairs: I personally hate having too much gear and extras laying around, so both of my toddlers have kid height chairs that mesh well with our other white chairs at the kitchen table, and I love them – keeps my kitchen looking less messy.

I would love to hear what your favorite Ikea items are.  Its such a big store that I’m sure Im missing out on plenty of other staples I could be filling my hard to push cart with!

Toddler Diaper Bag

Toddler Diaper Bag

After posting a picture on Instagram about my Fawn Design diaper bag I have had a few questions from some other mama’s who love the bag, but are wondering if it will hold enough, or be necessary “long term” because their baby isn’t super little anymore. I thought I would write a post about my toddler diaper bag, and what I keep in it!

Toddler Diaper Bag

I still carry a diaper bag or use my Tote Savvy insert in a tote 99% of the time, even though my kids are 2 and 4, and no one is in diapers.  I wanted to show what I carry in my bag for the time being with 2 toddlers.  I keep my bag packed the same all the time.  I load it either at night or in the morning daily, and feel it makes me much more prepared for daily outings!

Toddler Items | Toddler Diaper Bag

  1. A CamelBak for both kids.  These are my favorite water bottles for toddlers and both of my kids have several. They close up tight so I don’t worry they will leak in my bag.
  2. A pouch with “mommy items.”  This has my headphones, lipstick, lotion, etc.  I keep all of my items in one pouch so it can easily be grabbed with my wallet to go in a purse for date night, or outings on my own.
  3. A pouch with snacks for my kids.  I always have snacks for the kids on me.  Some of you know that my oldest, Jack, has an egg allergy, so grabbing snacks out and about isn’t always possible.
  4. A toy for each kiddo.
  5. S’well bottle
  6. Ju-Ju-Be Be Quick Wristlet  This is fairly new and I LOVE IT. I still carry a pull-up for Avé (just incase), wipes for hands and faces, and extra pants and undies for Avé.  This all fits in this great wristlet, and I’m sure I will love it even more for baby
  7. Wet Bag (similar: I sew most of mine).  I keep this on me incase of an accident for Avé.
  8. My wallet
  9. Sunglasses for myself and most of the time 1 or both kids.
  10. Stroller straps for our umbrella stroller (Similar) This is a just incase item, but I just keep them on me.
  11. Chocolate milk.  You’re probably thinking its a random Item, but I am a Starbucks frequenter, and have started just keeping these Horizon chocolate milks in my bag and when we get to the window I hand them back to the kids, and they are thrilled as though I got them their own drink at Starbucks.

I would love to hear what you keep in your toddler diaper bag, and stay tuned for a baby addition to this post because I am sure things will change in the next few months.

Faux Succulent Planter – How To

I have had quite a few questions on my Instagram about how to execute my faux succulent planter.  I decided to go with fake plants because I use the tray they are in year round for all sorts of things and love being able to switch things out!

This post contains affiliate links

white shelves with succulents

What you will need:

Tray or planter – mine is from Hobby Lobby from about a year ago, however Target has a similar one.

Small stones (or similar from a local craft store)

Succulents – Mine are from Hobby Lobby! They have great selections of faux succulents at Michales, Target, and probably anywhere else you can think of right now.

faux succulent planter

Faux Succulent Planter Steps (this is going to be REALLY simple):

Pour half of your rocks into the tray.

Remove long stems from succulents or bend them to the side.  you need them to sit with a very low profile.

Arrange the succulents.  Play around a bit, but you want a good mix of heights and colors.

Once you have a good arrangement you like – finish filling with rock.

This faux succulent planter how to  truly the easiest tutorial I can think of, but if you have questions please just ask!
